city 2 surf 08 - August 10 2008

The city 2 surf was such a fun and fantastic day.  A team of more than 40 pounded the pavement from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach and raised over $7000 along the way.  Thanks to our generous sponsor Laing O’Rourke, all our fabulous participants and to everyone who supported them.  Bring on the city 2 surf 2009!

thank you Orange!

It was so lovely to see so many familiar faces and to share with you the work of bricks + cartwheels.  The day was a HUGE success. We managed to raise   over   $5000 - we   are   now   well  on the way to raising the funds for

Stage 1! Fantastic!

kinross bring in the coins

After Harriet spoke at her former school, Kinross Wolaroi School, in Orange, NSW, the students held a coin trail in aid of bricks + cartwheels.  Students scrounged and collected coins and laid them in lines for an inter-house competition to see who could make the longest trail.  Their efforts blew us away- raising $1400 for the Secondary School for Girls in Katolo, Kenya.

Congratulations to all the staff and students for raising such an awesome amount!  Erokamano ahinya!

peace returns to Kenya

We are so thrilled and relieved for all of our friends in Kenya that peace has finally returned.  President Mwai Kibaki and Mr Raila Odinga signed an agreement on the formation of a coalition government in March and Odinga is now the Prime Minister of Kenya.  Thankfully all our friends have since returned to university, school, work and daily life however many Kenyans remain displaced from their homes.  We hope for a bright future for Kenya under the new constitution and leadership.

sydney gentlemen’s ball

As a not for profit society, Sydney Gentlemen's Ball choose a beneficiary each year to receive profits from their black-tie-ball.  bricks + cartwheels was lucky enough to be their chosen charity this year.  Held at Pruniers in Woollahra, the boys were generous hosts, with the splendid evening raising $5000 for bricks + cartwheels.

Thank you so much to the Sydney Gentlemen's Ball committee - what gentlemen!

peace in kenya

The ongoing political unrest in Kenya following December's elections continues to be a cause for concern for the bricks + cartwheels team.  We are hoping that the situation will calm down in the near future.  At this point we do not anticipate too major a disruption to our immediate plans for the Secondary School for Girls.  Our friends in Katolo and Kisumu are safe and we share the hope that Kenya will soon return to the peaceful country we know it to be.

b + c launch. 29th november. 6pm. the marly. newtown.

bricks + cartwheels hosted their first fundraiser at the Marlborough Hotel, Newtown on Thursday 29th November. It was a fabulous night with over 300 people.  We raised more than $6500 and every cent will go towards building the Secondary School for Girls.

It was an opportunity for everyone to get together, have a few drinks, a dance and of course there were lots of conversations all night about bricks + cartwheels in Kenya!

The raffle was a big highlight with so many great prizes - how could it not be?!  Many were lucky to take home a very fashionable bricks + cartwheels bag stuffed full of goodies.

Thank you so much to everyone that came and showed their support. We appreciate your generosity. Click here to see photos from the night.

ravenswood supports katolo

A big thank you to Ravenswood School for Girls in Gordon, Sydney.  2008 brings a new uniform for Ravenswood and the Secondary School for Girls, Katolo will soon be the recipient of hundreds of shirts, skirts and dresses.  We are so excited that the Ravenswood girls will continue to collect second hand uniforms during the phase out of the old uniform.

b + c make mud bricks in mudgee

The bricks + cartwheels team recently spent a weekend in Mudgee learning the art of mud brick making.  bricks + cartwheels has recently been exploring the potential of using stabilised soil block as a construction technique for the Secondary School for Girls, Kenya.

The weekend at Mudgee was the perfect opportunity to test this construction method. Gerry, from Rosby Vineyard, was an amazing teacher and bricks + cartwheels learned the ins and outs of building mud bricks from digging out the sludge from the dam to mixing and packing the mud hard into the moulds with our hands!

It was great to learn exactly what materials, equipment, time and labour is needed. The weekend ended up being very successful and most importantly Gerry and Kay from the Rosby Vineyard ended up with 102 mud bricks to build their new studio!

Thank you also to Lesley from Thistle Hill vineyard for her support and donation to bricks + cartwheels.

global studio johannesburg

One of the founding members of bricks + cartwheels, Georgia Bowen, has recently returned from participating in Global Studio Johannesburg.  The Global Studio is an on-going teaching and research project.  The studio has been established to bring together students, academics and professionals in the city building professions from developing and developed countries to take part in an interdisciplinary forum.  Global Studio continues to provide opportunities to develop new modes of professional education and practice with policy and research implications as well as possibilities for developing networks and partnerships.

Georgia presented Katolo’s Secondary School for Girls project at the People Building Better Cities (PBBC) conference in Johannesburg prior to The Global Studio.  PBBC is interested in how people can work together to improve their own and other people's lives. It addresses how participatory processes enable and improve the contribution of city building professionals to the lives of the urban poor, and how these professions can assist in the implementation of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

innovative building technologies

bricks + cartwheels is currently exploring the possibilities and potential of construction using stablised soil bricks.  Stabilised soil bricks would be made on site, providing local employment and training opportunities for the Katolo community.  Stabilised soil blocks are made by compressing a mixture of soil and a minimal quantity of cement.  The blocks are stronger than concrete blocks, do not incur fuel or electricity costs and are up to 50% cheaper than conventional bricks. Stabilised soil blocks may present a sustainable, cost effective environmentally friendly building component for the Secondary School for Girls.

Other research for Katolo includes exploring the use of solar electricity, borehole and water pumps, reed bed water filtration, bio latrines, rainwater harvesting amongst many other sustainable practices.
